Embracing
Diversity As
a
single
mom,
naming
my
mixed-race
baby
was
a
daunting
task.
I
wanted
something
unique
yet
meaningful
that
reflected
both
my
baby's
ancestry
and
my
love
for
her.
After
much
research
and
contemplation,
I
finally
settled
on
the
name
"Nia,"
which
means
"purpose"
in
Swahili. My
daughter's
father
is
from
Japan,
and
I
come
from
a
European
background,
so
I
wanted
her
name
to
represent
the
diversity
she
embodied.
We
might
not
have
turned
out
as
a
traditional
family,
but
that
didn't
mean
we
couldn't
give
our
daughter
a
strong
identity. One
of
the
things
I
love
about
having
a
mixed-race
baby
is
the
opportunity
to
embrace
diversity.
I
want
my
daughter
to
be
proud
of
all
her
heritages
and
to
understand
that
they
are
what
make
her
who
she
is.
I
hope
she
will
grow
up
feeling
comfortable
in
her
own
skin
and
accepting
others
for
who
they
are. Naming
a
child
is
a
huge
responsibility,
and
as
a
single
mom,
it
can
be
even
more
challenging.
But
at
the
end
of
the
day,
what
matters
most
is
the
love
we
give
our
children,
not
the
name
we
give
them.
I
may
not
have
all
the
answers,
but
I
do
know
that
I
will
always
be
there
for
my
daughter,
guiding
her
and
supporting
her
through
every
step
of
her
journey. In
a
world
that
can
be
harsh
and
judgmental,
I
want
my
daughter
to

I
hope
her
name
will

her
